About

Emerging Market Debt, an asset class for 2019?

If you trust that in 2019 the economic growth is reasonable, the USD oscillates in a stable bandwidth, the trade war is subdued and interest rates increase in a moderate way, emerging market debts could be an area to invest. We think, however, in a very selected way. Emerging Markets Debts are expected to experience growing differentiation in performance between countries and sectors of the market. At present, while most hard currency debt appears to be priced for perfection, selected local debt and currency markets are well positioned to generate handsome returns in the next five years. Therefore, a flexible strategy is required to allocate selectively to pockets of value in EM fixed income.

Matthew Michael, Product Director of Emerging Market Debt and Commodities, will explain the Schroders Emerging Market Debt Absolute Return strategy, which has established itself as an unique and low risk approach to investing in the asset class over the last 20 years. The strategy aims to minimise drawdowns while seizing the long-term opportunities. Additionally Schroders believe that the future will show a major trend away from beta to more flexible and actively managed strategies in fixed income and it will become more prevalent in the next few years.
